What should you compare before choosing a heat pump?
Ask how the proposed capacity fits the home's heating and cooling needs, what the existing ducts can deliver and how backup heat will be controlled. Bigger equipment is not automatically a better fit. Installation, airflow and controls affect the result alongside the equipment itself.
Compare the exact indoor and outdoor equipment, installed scope, electrical work, controls, startup checks and written warranty terms. Keep the complete installation price separate from possible incentives. If the current system has a confirmed repairable fault, compare that repair before deciding to replace it.

Is it normal for a heat pump to use auxiliary heat?
Auxiliary heat can be normal during colder weather, recovery from a large thermostat change or defrost. Frequent use in mild conditions may deserve evaluation.
Should there be frost on the outdoor unit in winter?
Light frost can occur and should be managed by normal defrost operation. Heavy or persistent ice, blocked airflow or unusual operation is a reason to call.
Do heat pumps need maintenance in both seasons?
